Free Range

In 2002, the band Free Range broke out of the hen house and began performing their

original style of music, known as “Cage Free Ethnograss”, at barn dances and hoedowns

around the Bitterroot.  Chicks and roosters alike strut and crow to the eclectic mix of

musical styles scratched out on acoustic instruments in a traditional string band

ensemble.  Free Range is a unique breed of old-time folk, bluegrass, and fiddle tunes, old-

world melodies, gypsy swing, chicken-pickin’, country music, and original compositions

hatched from the band’s wide-ranging musical tastes.  Members of the band include

Trevor Laboski, Jim Striebel, Brevy Walden, and Dave McAdoo.

The Ben Larson Band

If you’re looking for the real grow-yer-own, sawdust and gravel, sleep-under-the-stars songs celebrating the people who still get their hands dirty, then the Ben Larson Band is where you should look first. Composed by a farmer and carpenter from Philipsburg, Montana, Ben Larson and percussion-extraordinaire, Pfahl, filter the sounds of the high plains and backwoods, cosmic cowboys and heavy industry into their tales of modern life in the rural west. It’s working man's music, performed by guys whose love of performing barely outweighs their desire to live unbothered in the woods with their dogs, skilsaws and Kubota tractors.

A former sideman for Red Dirt star Stoney LaRue and co-founder of Austin indie band Brothers and Sisters, Dango has shared the stage with greats like Jerry Jeff Walker, Billy Joe Shaver, Alejandro Escovedo, John Fullbright, Nikki Lane, Wayne Kramer of MC5, and Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine.

Hillfolk Noir

Built on more than 15 years of “junkerdash” tradition, Hillfolk takes their acoustic guitar, double bass, and “anything you can find at a hardware store” sound and integrates driving drums and an electrified sound. From mountains of frontman Travis Ward’s ragged, spiral-bound notebooks, this Boise, Idaho-based band tells earnest stories about the lives of lovers, law-breakers, and the lion-hearted. “If John Steinbeck owned a speakeasy,” said John Doe (X, the Knitters), “Hillfolk Noir would be the house band.”

J. Carmichael

J. Carmichael writes ballads about love and a world spinning out of control. He has been defiant, perhaps to a fault, for most of his life, and it echoes in his music, from the way he writes to the instruments he plays, to what he writes about. Never content being confined within a genre, he grew up on Nashville Now and 90’s punk and indie and is influenced by the songwriting giants of any genre; just as comfortable at a fiddle festival as he is at a punk rock show.

They feature the fastest banjo picker in the west and four-part bass harmonies that you can hear from Plentywood to Wisdom. Dance if you feel the urge, just remember, they ain’t no boy band.
