In 2002, the band Free Range broke out of the hen house and began performing their original style of music, known as “Cage Free Ethnograss”, at barn dances and hoedowns around the Bitterroot. Chicks and roosters alike, strut and crow to the eclectic mix of musical styles scratched out on acoustic instruments in a traditional string-band ensemble. Free Range is a unique breed of old-time folk, bluegrass and fiddle tunes, old-world melodies, gypsy swing, chicken-picking; country music, and original compositions hatched from the band’s wide-ranging musical tastes. The band members include Trevor Laboski, Jim Striebel, Brevy Walden, and Dave McAdoo.
